Peace of Mind – Mental Health Matters
First off, let me begin by making it perfectly clear that I have no formal training or education in psychology, psychiatry or mental health. It is not even within my scope of practice in the United States to consult on matters of mental health. However, But after seeing patients in 7 different countries, I feel like I’ve learned a few things in regard to what makes people happy and what doesn’t make people happy.
In the United States, there are over 600,000 licensed professionals available for mental health counselling. Most of them, over 90 percent, specialise in depression, anxiety or couples counselling. These are all worthy and necessary areas of study, but it makes you wonder, why aren’t there more mental health professions that make a career of studying happiness? Maybe it’s not profitable. Are happy people going to seek mental health counselling? They should, but is it realistic?
In that regard, mental health can be compared to chiropractic. If you wait until you’re in pain, it’s a going to be a longer road to steer your way out of it. Again, I’m not an expert, but mental health seems the same.
I committed two years to regular counselling – one visit per week for over two years. Judy, my therapist in St. Louis was wonderful. I learned so much from her. Whether you feel the need for counselling or not, what I realised almost immediately was that counselling is forum for honesty – honesty with yourself. When you pay for something, you have an innate desire to get value from it. That was the first thing I learned.
The second thing I learned was that it’s really difficult to change your habits, but it’s not as difficult to manage them so that you can minimise the collateral damage that you may cause the people around you. It’s all about self-awareness.
